The Lahore School of Economics team consisted of Abu Bakr Hayat, Affaan Sherwani, Umar Akram Sahi, Khawaja Talal Sadiq, Shahira Khan, Wasae Imran, Hamza Ghaznavi, Haziq Masood, Saad Sohail and Zain Hyder. The team won an unprecedented 8 out of 10 Best Delegate trophies and in addition two Honorable Mention Awards. Aitchison College stood second in the competition with a 6 out of 10 score.

Paid posting has been one of the most used income streams by bloggers all over the blogosphere, particularly for small bloggers and one man publishers. There are so many platforms (including IZEA, Sponsored Reviews, Blogvertise, Review Me, Link Worth and many more) that connect advertisers with bloggers.

Bloggers review, recommend and endorse products and services and create buzz sending traffic back to advertisers’ sites and giving back links. In return they make some money as a fee for their services. This has been working fine for everyone.

I have been in ‘paid posting’ as a bloggers as well as an advertiser since 2004 using almost all available platforms. Looking back on my accounts sheet, I can say that 2005-2009 was a peak period and yielded highest earning. That is when I skimmed the milk (just bragging). There were fewer bloggers with high page rank and more advertisers seeking reviews and link backs. If my account sheet is any measure, the paid posting started to decline in 2010. Many platforms (including Review Me – once the best service) packed up. The other lowered their rates (IZEA that once offered opportunities for an average of $10 per post is now offering opportunities for 50 cents) and some others (Sponsored Reviews) have stopped accepting new blogs.

I was wondering what could be the reasons for the slow death of paid posting (word of mouth marketing). Is it growth of social media channels (Google Plus Business Pages and Facebook Like Pages or Twitter)?

Is this the end of the paid posting era? What do you think?

The Sangni Fort

Sangni, the fort, stands on a low knoll surrounded on three sides by a hill stream that is a torrent when it rains. Otherwise, it is a meandering dry ravine with a few ponds of blue water. The fort is picturesque, both because of its setting and its pristine condition: it seems as if the builders have just had time to collect their materials and equipment and leave the site.Yet Sangni is no less than one hundred and seventy or so years old.

My civil servant friend Shahid Nadeem told me of it. Shahid regularly takes off into the wilds where few others venture. No surprise then that he has a great stock of travel stories. And so there we were with his friend Tariq Mumtaz meandering through the traffic of Gujar Kh an near Rawalpindi and on to the road to village Beval.

If Mirpur in Kashmir boasts of everything being powered by British pounds, Beval does equally better. Humongous bungalows grow on the slopes around the village. They all rise through three or four storeys, colonnades and pediments make up the façades and vast terraces spread out between iron grills on the upper floors. None of these concrete monstrosities seem to have any less than three dozen rooms. Nor too does a single one seemed lived-in.

Shahid said that the men of Beval like those of Mirpur had all made their fortunes in menial jobs in Britain. They brought home their bags full of pounds sterling to flaunt in the shape of these fancy houses. But these architectural eyesores have no utility for the owners continue to live in Britain and only their ghosts will ever return to haunt these bare walls.

Past Beval we reached Taka and took the road north to Sangni. The fort, just outside the village, less than twenty-five kilometres off the Grand Trunk Road at Gujar Khan, looked prim and new. Save for a couple of them, the merlons on the battlement were all intact, the towers sat solidly and without any cracks, the lintels and doorways were complete. Only the dark lichen covering the masonry showed that the building was old.

We entered the narrow enceinte of Sangni fort through a well kept doorway with traces of modern cement plastering conservation. Inside it was empty save for some rooms to one side and a well on the other. The far end was taken up by a newish domed building. An elderly man sweeping the veranda of

the building gave up his work and came to speak to us. This, he said, was the tomb of someone called Abdul Hakim, a reputed saint. He told us the story of this man having come from Persia. This took me back to my unanswered question as to why all holy men must come from either Arabia, Persia or Central Asia. Why do we believe that a sub continental can never achieve nirvana?

Anyway, after some wandering about, the man came to live where Sangni fort now stands. Some years later, so the story proceeds, the Dogra rulers of Kashmir chose the same spot for their fort and threw the man out. As he was leaving, he is reported to have told the Dogras that it will be he who will remain eventually in the fort. Thereafter for as long as Abdul Hakim lived, he remained in Chakrali village not very far away. There he died and was buried sometime in the 1850s. Early in the 20th century he is reported to have started appearing in the dreams of the people of the neighbouring village of Sui Cheemian exhorting them to remove his remains from the Chakrali tomb to Sangni fort.

As all these pointless tales unfold, this one has a few meaningless twists as well. But to cut a tedious story short, the corpse was dug up and transferred to the fort and the domed mausoleum raised above it. The story goes that the casket (taboot, the narrator insisted it was a taboot) being dug up was opened to reveal the man as if in living splendour with beads of water on his face. This surely can be nothing but pure hogwash for Muslim burials are in shrouds, never in caskets!

Ever since the transference of the skeleton there are two festivals of the dead saint. The one at Chakrali where he was originally buried and the other at Sangni fort. Much money goes into the boxes placed at both sites. The one in the fort being the real winner for here the faithful gather every Thursday leaving behind a goodly booty for the current descendent. Enriched by these donations, he lives like a parasite off the superstitions of simpletons. Three generations before him have done the same and he carries the tradition forward.

So much for superstitious legend concerning the tomb. As for Sangni fort, it is quite evident that it could not have pre-dated the Sikh period. But the question was why would the Sikhs build a fort in the Potohar badlands? There are some interesting facts that might show why. First of all by the beginning of the 19th century Gujar Khan had evolved into a busy mart for the trade of wheat. The grain, grown in Gujar Khan or brought over from Chakwal to the southwest and Kallar to the north, was famous under the generic name of Gujar Khan wheat and transported off in all directions. This trade would have meant wealth in the area.

Now, the Sikhs under Ranjit Singh took control of this part of the country in 1814 and were soon well established. To me it appears that the fort was built in order to facilitate tax collection: a small fortified garrison in the heart of a country seething with recalcitrant hill tribes known for their warlike propensities. But some due needs be given to the tradition of the Dogras having built this fort. Again, in 1831 Maharaja Ranjit Singh granted the district of Murree as a fief to Gulab Singh the Dogra ruler of Kashmir. The town of Gujar Khan may have gone under Dogra control at that time or shortly afterwards when Ranjit Singh died and the Dogras expanded their sway. History tells us of the ruthless rule of the Dogras wherein the slightest dissent was punished with death. In that case the Dogras would have kept a tight little garrison at Sangni forever prepared to ride out and quell this little rebellion or that.

Not long after that the War of Independence (or the Mutiny, suit yourself) was fought in 1857. Shortly thereafter Rawalpindi district became part of the Raj. With the return of order and justice, Sangni was forgotten. Years later, sometime in the 1920s, finding it vacant, the keepers of the shrine of Abdul Hakim, an obscure saint, appropriated it for his tomb. What the real motive was behind this usurpation was perhaps known only to this early example of the now well known qabza group. They may perhaps have thought that the lofty edifice of Sangni would lend grandeur to their own unknown saint. If that was it, a visit on a Thursday will show that they did not do so badly.

Insects (pests) of all kinds can attack living spaces at almost any time of the year. Generally, when temperatures rise, most of the pests perk up. As the weather changes and it becomes warmer, pests’ metabolism increases and they are more active.

Worst of all house pests, termites are temperature dependent. Termites initially are just a mild nuisance, but if they are not controlled at early stage they can be destructive. Of about 2000 known species of termite, most commonly found in this part of the world are known as white ants that damage wooden items such as furniture or house structures.

In summers, termites can wreak havoc in homes. Termite can start their damaging activities in warmer parts of the houses even in winters as well. And here is the rub: They are hard to find even when they are digesting sub flooring or tunneling through walls of any home. And when the columns of tiny ants are seen marching across walls, the damage might have already been done.

How to find these home wreckers? Walk your home's perimeter regularly, and look for hanging zigzag mud tunnels on the walls. Termites build these for covert, humid access to wood. Also look for broken off wings and sandy, wood colored termite droppings.

Once termite colony (yes they live in their own colonies) is suspected, it is better to get help for professional termite extermination. But there are so many simple things that can be done by owners to prevent termites or at least lessen the possibility of getting termites. Preventative measures include making sure the wooden parts of houses have no direct contact with the ground. This means keeping walls free of dirt piles, not letting trellises or plants grow from the ground to the siding, and not stacking wood against the house. Even thick wood mulch can provide cover for termites. Also keeping moisture away from the foundation and immediately repairing all types of leaks around structural wood is useful. Paying particular attention to wooden decks and stairs, and areas where the structure rests on the foundation walls, and especially in crawl spaces or any area with an earthen floor also helps detect the attack.

Earlier, building owners and construction people concerned about termite control should start at the planning stage. The first thing to consider is the type of foundation a building is going to stand on or will be resting on - some of the foundation types have more potential for termite problems than others. Other factors to consider are timing of treatment (pre-construction or post-construction), type of treatment (liquid or feeding stations) and good building management practices.

Beside termites, cockroaches are the hardiest (and for some the scariest) of all the house summer pests. Cockroaches are active in the night mostly. If one spots any in the daytime in kitchen or bathrooms, it means the house is infested with cockroaches.

Cockroaches damage the health of the family member by spreading microorganisms. Cleanliness and good sanitation in homes can reduce their menace. To prevent cockroaches from entering the house, seal all the gaps that can allow them access to your home from outside. Do not leave anything that it can feed on in the open. This is a difficult task as they eat almost anything and everything.

Black ants that commonly infest the houses are the smaller variety often called sugar ants. These ants eat sweets and oil and normally infest the kitchen. To prevent them from attacking your kitchen keep all the food in containers, clean the counter tops at regular intervals and empty the garbage cans frequently. The best way to eliminate these ants is to eliminate any source of their food.

Bees (yellow or black locally called demoon) are also common in summers. These flying insects have a nasty sting that causes swelling and pain and even can land anyone in hospital if attacked by more bees.

House flies and mosquitoes are also damaging and swarm more in summers. House flies not only rate high as a nuisance, but are a constant threat to health by carrying disease organisms from filthy habitats to contaminate food. Flies may carry bacteria on their bodies which can then be transferred to food. They breed in garbage, grass clippings and in other decomposing plant and animal matter. Maintain trash containers with tight-fitting lids and regularly clean up dog feces in the yard. Keep doors and windows closed unless equipped with tight-fitting screens. Different repellent and electric mosquito and housefly terminators are also available in market.

All season pests like rats and cecak (wall lizards) scuttle about in dirty places and can track filth in if you do not block their access into your living environment. Rats not only spread disease, but are also a nuisance as they like to chew through doors, window screens, cables on appliances and computers, electric cables in your attic and even cars where the seats become their nest. Cecak are actually quite helpful creatures as they consume mosquitoes, house flies and some other pests that live in homes but most people do not like them scurrying about the walls and ceilings of their home.

People use different types of chemical substances or mixture of substances to destroy, repel and mitigate the house pests. Indiscriminate use of chemical substances can also be an environmental problem or out rightly dangerous for children (remember incidents when kids have been reported to eat up poisonous pills kept for killing house rates. Therefore, utmost care has to be exercised while using any chemical substance at home.

All the home pest insects cause damage in one form or the other in every season. There presence is a nuisance at best and destructive for material and unhealthy for human at worst. They look ugly and make the environment is homes unhygienic and unaesthetic. Inspecting house carefully and looking for telltale signs of infestation at all times and terminating them before any damage is the best strategy. Precautionary measures should be taken anyway. A new report shows half of Britons eat dangerous amounts of salt, risking heart problems, strokes, kidney disease and cancer.

Our nutrition expert Angela Dowden takes a look at some of the myths, and truths about salt.

Fact: We eat far more salt than we need

At least 26 million people in the UK are eating more than the recommended adult daily salt intake of six grammes. Men eat an average of 11g of salt a day, equivalent to almost two level teaspoons, while women consume around 8.1g.

Children also have more salt than recommended.

Babies below the age of six months should have less than 1g of salt per day and seven to 12-month-olds should have no more than 1g per day. For ages one to three, the recommendation is 2g; for four to six-year-olds it is 3g; and for seven to ten-year-olds it is 5g. Children over 11 have adult requirements.

Myth: Sodium and salt are the same

Chemically, salt is sodium chloride - and every 1g of salt contains just 0.4g sodium. This means that if a food label gives only sodium information, you need to multiply it by two-and-a-half to get the salt content.

While we cannot live without sodium - it regulates the body's fluid balance and is crucial for nerve and muscle function - too much is harmful. The chloride part of salt isn't deemed harmful, though.

Fact: Salt isn't the only source of sodium

Sodium is also found in additives including sodium nitrite, sodium bicarbonate and monosodium glutamate. So read the label of processed foods and medicines.

Myth: Salt is the primary cause of high blood pressure

Too much salt can cause cause blood pressure rises in people who are already prone to hypertension (high blood pressure).

But whether healthy people who don't have blood pressure problems need to reduce their salt intake is a matter of controversy.

In launching its latest campaign, however, The Food Standards Agency has decided that population-wide reductions in salt are to be recommended, citing the Intersalt trial - the world's largest salt investigation - as evidence.

This study involved more than 10,000 people from 32 countries and showed a general correlation between sodium consumption and blood pressure - a pattern which was strongest in the middle-aged, but also persisted weakly across the whole age and blood pressure range.

Experts involved in the study estimate that a blanket reduction by one third in sodium intake could reduce strokes in the UK by 22 per cent, and heart attacks by 16 per cent.

Fact: salt can make you heavier

According to Professor Graham MacGregor, of St George's Hospital in London, salt consumption results in us carrying around 3lb of excess fluid (salt attracts water like a sponge, and this can be especially troublesome for women before their period). High salt intakes are also associated with a greater excretion of calcium in the urine - which some researchers think may compromise bone strength and increase the risk of developing osteoporosis.

A correlation has also been found between salt and asthma, and salty foods and stomach cancer.

Fact: Some people may not need to reduce their salt consumption

This is possibly the case - a review in the Journal Of The American Medical Association concluded that salt reduction has little benefit for many healthy individuals with normal blood pressure.

Other, arguably more important factors in keeping blood pressure healthy are reducing weight and alcohol intake.

In the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hyper-tension) trial in the U.S., those who ate more potassium, calcium and magnesium through a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and low-fat dairy products showed significant reductions in blood pressure even if they didn't restrict salt.

However, the effects were better still when salt was minimised as well. One estimate is that ten to 25 per cent of those with normal blood pressure are sensitive to the effects of salt, but what's incontrovertible is that most of us eat far more salt than we need, so reducing intake is probably wise for all of us.

This is especially so if there is a history of high blood pressure in your family.

Myth: You should not cut down on salt if you sweat a lot

It's often been suggested that manual workers and athletes need extra salt, or that it's dangerous to cut down on salt when the weather is hot. But you need very little salt to be healthy - and many people in tropical countries eat far less salt than we do.

The Salt Manufacturers' Association argues that at-risk groups for low salt include the elderly and pregnant women.

But if you're in one of these groups you'd have to be eating a very low salt diet indeed (and in the hottest weather) to run into problems. In practice, it's extremely unlikely to happen.

Myth: Most salt is added at the table

About 80 per cent of the salt we eat comes from processed foods. Supermarkets and manu-facturers have pledged to reduce salt, but they aren't doing it quickly enough for either the Government or Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH), which represents the views of the leading medical experts on salt in the UK.

The food industry has been asked by both the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health to come up with plans to make a 40 to 50 per cent reduction.

Fact: There's a commercial interest in keeping our food salty

According to Professor MacGregor, salt is by far the cheapest flavour enhancer and can make cheaper foods more palatable. "Salt also helps food to retain water and bulks up products extremely cheaply," he says. "Salt intake is the main driver to thirst and, therefore, soft drink consumption. It is, therefore, of huge commercial interest to many companies."

Myth: Eating just 6g a day is impossible

No - there's a lot you can do while manufacturers plan to make salt reductions. Start by checking the label on processed foods to see how much sodium they contain. More than 0.5g sodium (1.25g salt) is "a lot"; less than 0.1g sodium (0.25g salt) is a little. Also try following these tips, from Sam Church, a nutritionist at the Food Standards Agency:

Be sparing with sauces, especially soy sauce, because they are usually very high in salt.
Cut down on salty snacks such as crisps - go for low-salt snacks such as dried fruit, sticks of vegetables and unsalted nuts instead.
Try to eat less of heavily salted foods such as bacon, cheese, pickles, smoked fish and many ready-prepared meals.
Choose canned vegetables and pulses that are marked "no added salt".
Make your own stock or choose lower salt stock cubes, because stock cubes tend to be high in salt.
Add less salt to cooking - use herbs and spices to add flavour to cooking, instead of salt.
Get out of the habit of adding salt at the table - try to remember to taste food first.

Last week, I attended the Junior World Entrepreneurial Forum Pakistan - Conference 2011 jointly hosted by World Entrepreneurship Forum, France and Lahore School of Economics, Pakistan. The Conference was aimed “to create awareness about the world in 2050 and also to develop thinking and generating ideas through an entrepreneurial mind.”

The World Entrepreneurship Forum (WEF) is a global think tank of entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, experts and politicians, chosen for their entrepreneurial achievements and their commitment to society. Presently, 110 members of 55 countries (including Syed Babar Ali and Iqbal M Khan from Pakistan) are active in the World Entrepreneurship Forum. The think tank is working for a more entrepreneurial world, creating wealth and social justice through four key levers - Creating Innovative and High-Growth Companies to create millions of jobs around the planet. Disseminating Entrepreneurship at the “Base of the Pyramid” to alleviate poverty and create new markets. Shaping Entrepreneurial Cities, being tomorrow’s centers for innovation and Implementing Entrepreneurial Education to disseminate entrepreneurial mindset, skills and competencies throughout society, on a permanent basis.

The Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF) - students’ version of the WEF - brings together hundreds of students from different countries for events lasting four days. The objective of the JWEF is to empower the younger generation of students with entrepreneurial skills for the future. Currently they are 10 chapters of the junior league in the world, with Pakistan being one of the countries.

This year Pakistan hosted its inaugural Junior Forum Conference 2011 at Lahore School of Economics (July 27-30, 2011) that was attended by large number of young scholars from UET, LUMS, UCP, Punjab University, FAST, NUST, IM Sciences, and Lahore School of Economics.

There was a lot of meaningful talk and information was presented based on research with relevance to local context. On the sidelines of the Conference 2011, I rounded up some entrepreneurship experts ( from Asad Umar (Engro), Khalid Mansoor (Engro), Moonis Rehman (Rozee.com), Saleem M. Rafik (Nadra), Shehla Akram (WCCI), Arif Masud Mirza (ACCA), Kamil Khan Mumtaz (Architect), Amjad Saqib (Akhuwat), Hassan Sohaib Murad (UMT), Zubyr Soomro (Ex-CEO Citi Bank), Salim Shauri (NetSol), Saquib Mohyuddin (BSF), Nayyar Ali Dada, Ambareen Waheed, and Iqbal M. Khan) and culled their insights on the lack of entrepreneurship education in Pakistan. All said that entrepreneurship education is the only way to prepare for year 2050 and beyond.

Entrepreneurship is a set of skills and attitudes, ranging from the ability to think in multidimensional ways to the ability of making out new opportunities and putting ideas into practice that results in high growth rates, new chances and more benefits to all segments of society including the poor. It requires an application of energy and passion towards the creation and implementation of new ideas and creative solutions. Essential factors include the willingness to take calculated risks in terms of time, equity and career; the ability to formulate an effective venture team; the creative skills to organize needed resources, and fundamental skills of building solid business plan and finally the vision to recognize opportunity where others see chaos, contradiction, and confusion. It is more than the mere creation of business. But can these traits be taught in the class?

In the past two decades, there has been debates over question like is business enterprise in your genes or can it be taught in the business schools? Many argued that success depends on temperament. Some said entrepreneurship is about having acumen that business schools cannot teach. Some other said the passion for business is not something you can learn in a classroom.

Notwithstanding myths, “this issue has been settled now and everyone believes that entrepreneurship education is a must,” says Senor Entrepreneurship Fellow Iqbal M Khan. A research study says, “five years after graduation, the average annual income for entrepreneurship majors and MBAs who concentrated in entrepreneurship at the school was almost 27 percent higher than for other business majors and students with standard MBAs. Moreover, entrepreneurship graduates were three times more likely to form new companies. Even those entrepreneurship graduates who took jobs within large companies earned bigger paychecks.” Another research on the subject shows that “the more entrepreneurial classes taught at the MBA level, the more likely students are to become entrepreneurs.”

In Pakistan, many business schools (including Lahore School, LUMS, GC University and IBA) are already teaching entrepreneurship. Need is that entrepreneurship education is brought into mainstream. Business schools can best provide platforms for entrepreneurial activities; a strong focus on entrepreneurship education will certainly spill over to non-business students and help promote an entrepreneurial spirit. Viewing business schools as mediators of skills, entrepreneurship students pursuing an entrepreneurial career are equipped with a set of skills that will help them identify new business ideas and provide them with a practical approach to entrepreneurship. “By putting students in an environment of entrepreneurialism, you can encourage them to try becoming an entrepreneur,” says Professor Iqbal M Khan.

Entrepreneurship education can inculcate willingness to take calculated risks in terms of time, equity and career; the ability to formulate an effective venture team; the creative skills to organize needed resources, and fundamental skills of building solid business plan and finally the vision to recognize opportunity. The students can develop entrepreneurial perspective that they can exhibit in their careers.

Traditionally, entrepreneurship perspective has always flourished in Pakistan despite the intrusive role of governments in the marketplace, political instability, and continuing wave of terrorism, lack of infrastructure and more so lack of academic and research support. Entrepreneurship cities of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Gujrat are very good examples to cite. Effective entrepreneurship education can take this already present spirit to next level.

Pakistan requires a dynamic approach towards entrepreneurial education, to ensure socio-economic growth. If Pakistan (also other courtiers) has to meet the challenges set by the WEF, entrepreneurship education must be given more importance. The need of the hour is to adopt and utilize entrepreneurship in current education system and bring it into the mainstream. Only then, we can hope to see entrepreneurial spirit, which would grow individual entrepreneurs at all levels by year 2050 and beyond.

There were many things on my schedule when I travelled from Multan to Quetta by road instead of rail: to see the tomb of Ghazi Khan, to visit famous Fort Monro and familiarize myself with this less travelled rout to Quetta.

For those who take their chance for the first time to the city, it might sound too good to be true but Dera Ghazi Khan (D G Khan) in the past was known as Dera Phullan Da Sehra — ‘land of flowers’. “The canal skirted its eastern side, fringed with luxurious gardens of mango trees, while ghats lined the bank, thronged in summer by numerous bathers.

Ghazi Khan Mirani son of a Baloch chieftain Haji Khan founded the city on his own name on the tract between Suleman Range and River Indus in 1474. Bannu-Dera Ismail Khan-Jacobabad, famous trade route of the ast ran through the city. It developed into a very beautiful and prosperous city of that time. Till 1758, eighteen princes of the Ghazi Khan’s family successively ruled the city and bore the names of their ancestors”, wrote Mr. Bruce in his account in 1869. Kalhoras, Durranis, Mughals, Abbasis and Sikhs also exercised control over the city before it fell to the British.

Mighty River Indus had been steadily and gradually shifting its course westwards for a long time. D G Khan remained on the mercy of the River and great floods occurred in 1812, 1833, and 1842. It was completely washed away in 1856. The River now flows over the site of ancient dwelling.

The founder Ghazi Khan Mirani would not be able to recognize the ‘new’ city that was planned by British engineers on the principle of ‘Grid Iron Pattern’ - all roads and streets meeting at right angle - and built on present location between the period from 1900-1910 about 15 Kilometres downstream on the bank of Manika Canal near the tomb of Ghazi Khan Mirani.

Let us just assume it: D G Khan was a great town on the bank of Indus in fifteenth century. Does the town even exist? Yes, only in history books. Many things combine to show that D G Khan was a gem in the time gone by.

One of the most exciting buildings of the past is the tomb of Ghazi Khan Mirani. The tomb was built in fifteenth century on an octagonal plan, like shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam in Multan, with battering walls and corner turrets. Standing in front of the tomb, dismayed, I could feel the depredation and vandalism that would have few parallels. Dome and upper story of the tomb have vanished. The main entrance to the chamber of the tomb is in the East with two smaller doors in the northern and western directions are stripped of the gates. There are 11 mud graves inside the tomb and a graveyard has spread around the tomb. The walls are pitted. The pitchi cari and calligraphy inside the tomb is also fading. The slabs of stone painted with floral and geometric designs are falling. Once magnificent and imposing tomb is now sinking in ground. No body comes to lay flower or pay respect to the dead Baloch Sardar. In the past it had also been used to keep the animals. Relics of the tomb are certainly precious.

Unfortunately, currently, D G Khan, more than any other Pakistani city, lacks sensitivity to its heritage. The condition of temples, dharam shalas and gao shalas is even worse. Most of them have been converted into residential quarters, some are being used as waste receptacles and from few others even the bricks have been taken away. “To retain the heritage and history of the city, at least two temples situated east of Tounsa-D G Khan Road and whatever is left of Ghazi Khan’s tomb should immediately be declared as protected monuments”, says Hashim Sher Khan, a social activist who has written to many national and international agencies including UNESCO for this purpose, “but to no avail” he adds. D G Khan of Waderas, Sardars and Tumandars and patriots like Sher Muhammad who made world Pakistani as part of his name seem to be on its way to decline.

Hashim Sher Khan says, “Dera Ghazi Khan is the cultural capital of Pakistan. It is not only geographically situated on the junction point of all the four provinces but is also a place where their cultural traditions meet”. Besides legendary hospitality, the most famous cultural symbols I encountered in the city during my stay are hamachas and tabaqs.

A son of the soil, Dr Ghulam Fareed once narrated a tale about his childhood to Raza Ali Abdi (BBC). The tale reads, “Big charpoys (coats) are found in every nook and corner of the city. These coats serve as open drawing rooms in the localities. There was one big coat in front of our house too. The day I left D G Khan for higher studies, I saw people sitting on that coat: talking, relaxing, and sharing. I saw the same people sitting, doing same things, once I returned from England after 15 years. Only they had gone a little old.” D G Khan is famous for big charpoys locally known as Hamachas throughout the country.

Another thing for which D G Khan is famous is tabaq meaning cooking utensil with wide mouth. Nanbais prepare meat and beef dishes in these utensils. British traveller Alexander Bern who came to D G Khan in 1936-37 wrote that there were 1597 shops in the city out of which 40 were of nanbais. Once the new city was inhabited, the nanbais also migrated and set up their shops in Pathar Bazaar. Now most of them have developed and converted their shops in modern eating joints but you can still find any thing from Nalli Nihari for breakfast to Siri Pae for dinner if you like. The only difference is that Tabaqs are made of cast iron instead of clay these days. Names of Ustad Allah Yar, Ustad Qader, Ustad Allah Ditta and Ustad Muhammad Siddique who were the best Tabaqis of their times are still remembered with respect.

As per the legend, the throne of Prophet Hazrat Suleman (A S) once landed on the hill range known as Suleman Range. Next to the city on the route to Quetta is Fort Munro Peak in Suleman Range. The first thing that came to my mind after turning on a rocky road to Fort Munro from village Khar (or Kharar) was a famous couplet that was composed by poet Mustafa Zaidi who was once a Political Assistant in Fort Munro. The poet lived here soaking up the scenery and isolation while contemplating his own future and love life. He composed, “Inhe pathroon pe chal kar agar aa sako to aao, mere ghar ke raste main koi kahkashan nahin hey”. The going on the road these days is bad that gets worst in case of a light shower. Later, I also visited the library that was established by Mustafa Zaidi but now it has been converted into an office of some government department. By the way, who wants to read these days?

Village TGD is changing fast. The relative prosperity is visible. TGD was the first village in Punjab to have its own solar power house a decade ago and it is still working. Villagers are putting their children, particularly the girls in school. The Woman Art Centre is also playing a part in the well being of the villagers. The Centre has provided furniture and educational training aids to the two government primary schools (one for girls and the other for boys) in village and has also opened a well equipped basic health care centre. Books are distributed among students every year. Fruit and flower trees are given to residents for their court yards and they are encouraged to grow their own kitchen gardens.

Best of all, an annual quality of life competition is held in the village when best mud houses and brick houses are selected in different categories. Owners of mud houses have lucrative incentives (thanks to SPARC) and they keep their homes in spanking condition and well maintained all the year. NGOs represent an alternative to the constructed organizational entities. They are flexible and can react faster to the changes. This is the theory as seen in anthropological and ethnological aspects. In our local context and in the face of rampant corruptions rooted deep in governmental organization, we hear so many debates about NGOs and their work. What is more, some segments in our society are totally against NGOs and their good work. Problem is that those who oppose the mere presence of NGOs might not even understand what are NGOs, how they work and fill the void left by the state or how much NGOs can influence for the collective good of the society.

It is in this milieu that Javed Sajjad Ahmad – a veteran social scholar – has brought How to Start and Manage Non-Governmental Organizations. The author has answered many thorny questions about NGOs that can help all stakeholders. “The book is a guide, a ready reference, or a step-by-step manual to launch and nurture an NGO. Existing NGOs, large or small, will find information in the book that they can use to raise funds, hone their organizational skills or learn how to manage growing pains. Those who take their chance to cross the River Ravi from Saghian Bridge to go to Sheikhupura in the suburbs of Lahore have to pass through the flower nurseries. Also, along the road has come up a Flower Market near Saghian Bridge. After turning on Sheikhupura-Sargodha Road from the Chowk where a beautiful replica of Hiran Minar (The Deer Tower) has been made, you drive along the bumpy two-way road lined up on both sides with smoke emitting factories of different kinds: fabrics, chemicals, glass, and paper pulp. At places the pungent whiff reminds as if one is driving on Grand Trunk Road near Kala Shah Kaku. Wall chalking, religious and or commercial slogans - is another thing that one notices all along the road to Sheikhupura.

Jehangir Abad turned Sheikhupura is situated in Ravi-Chenab corridor and fast turning from a market agricultural town to an industrial city. Adjacent to Lahore, the town is surrounded by old places like Sangla Hill (old Sakala), Nankana Saheb (birth place of Baba Guru Nanak) and Jandiala Sher Khan (last resting place of Waris Shah).

Hunting grounds were an important part of the physical environment of Moghal emperors. The place where the town stands today was one of Jahangir's (Prince Salim) princely dominions during his father Akbar's reign. The town was founded by Jehangir, near village Sahu Malli, during his rule in 1607. The king declared the barren jungles adjoining the place as royal hunting ground. After the death of king's darling deer Mans Raj, this hunting ground was changed into a protected sanctuary and hunting was prohibited. In the memory of his favourite antelope, the king also constructed an octagonal tower in 1607 at the foot of the grave of the deer. In 1620, a square lake like pond and Baradari was added to the monument. A causeway with its own gateway connects the pavilion with the mainland and minaret. At the centre of each side of the tank, a brick ramp slopes down to the water that used to provide access for royal animals and wild game. Later he conferred the entire area upon Sikandar Moin.

A special feature of Hiran Minar is its location and environment: the top of the Minar is perhaps the best place in the province of Punjab to get a feel for the broader landscape and its relationship to a Moghal site. Looking north from the top of the Minar, one can see a patch of forest which is similar to the scrub forest vegetation of Moghal times, while to the west are extensively-irrigated fields, a product of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but similar in size and appearance to the well-irrigated fields of the Moghal period. The Lower Chenab Canal has turned the land into one of the most fertile area in the country now.

In eighteenth century, Nadir shah and Ahmed shah Abdali passed through Jehangir Abad once they came to attack India. Punjabi poet Syed Waris Shah had composed some pointing details of the attacks and conditions of the society of the time in his classic folk romance Heer Ranjha. Sikh came to the power in the later half of eighteenth century when Moghal authority weakened after the death of Aurangzeb Alamgir. It is during Sikh rule that the name of the town was changed from Jehangir Abad to Sheikhupura.

Sheikhupura was separated from Gujranwala and declared district in 1920 with Sharq Pur and Khankah Dogran as two of its tehsiels. Electricity came into the town in 1931. During independence movement, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah addressed a huge crowd in Sheikhupura while going to Faisalabad (then Layal Pur) in 1942. Later, the geographical boundaries of the district were again changed in 1962. The remains of once majestic Sheikhupura Fort, constructed by King Jehangir, reminds of the times gone by. Five storied building of the Fort speak of the expertise of its architects. The Moghul Fort was built in 1619 for use as a hunting lodge. The Fort is built of bricks rather than stone, a common feature of Moghul forts. The Fort was later used by Sikh Princess Rani Nakayan and her private quarters are decorated with superbly preserved frescoes depicting dancing girls, hunt and court scenes and images of Guru Nanak. History has it that Arbeel Singh fired one hundred rounds on the Sheikhupura Fort to break in. During Ranjeet Singh's time, the Fort was renovated. Some of the murals are still there on the walls of the Fort. Around the Fort, some wood carving on doors, windows and balconies of old havelies can be seen being eaten by termite.

Maharani Jind Kaur (some time called Rani Jindaan), who was described by Lord Dalhousie as the only woman in the Punjab with manly understanding and in whom the British Resident foresaw a rallying point for the well-wishers of the Sikh dynasty, was kept under close surveillance in Sheikhupura Fort. Henry Lawrence laid down that she could not receive in audience more than five or six sardars in a month and that she remain in purdah like the ladies of the royal families of Nepal, Jodhpur and Jaipur. Maharani Jind Kaur was later exiled from the Punjab. She was taken to Firozpur and then to Banaras. Her annual allowance, which according to the treaty of Bharoval had been fixed at one and a half lakh of rupees, was reduced to twelve thousand. Her jewellery worth fifty thousand of rupees was forfeited; so was her cash amounting to a lakh and a half. The humiliating treatment of the Maharani caused deep resentment among the people of the Punjab. Even the Muslim ruler of Afghanistan, Amir Dost Muhammad, protested to the British, saying that such treatment is objectionable to all creeds."

Old Rai Pur and now famous Nanakana Sahib, a birth place of Guru Nanak and last resting place of Waris Shah in Jandiala Shekhan are also claims of Sheikhupura to international fame. Gazetteer of the district written by British reads, Nanakana Sahib was then in the heart of jungle thirty miles from the nearest railway station and on the anniversary of the Guru's birth was visited by a few hundred pious pilgrims. These days much more Sikhs from all over the world visit the birth place of Baba Nanak.

Despite being near Lahore, the town has not developed and all the civic facilities are over burdened. Over crowding, population increase, litter, and power outages have all played a part in turning small hamlet into a teeming sprawling slum. Moghal King who founded it would not be able to recognize the town if he comes back. There are no sufficient healthy recreations in town and people of Sheikhupura go to Lahore to have an eating experience at Food Street, for celebrating basant bash or for other recreations. The main road that passes through the town was once landscaped on both sides. Now the landscape and green strips along the road have vanished. The bifurcation railing in the middle of the road has broken down at places and people have made crossing points there. Completion of Jinnah Park was very festive for the residents of Sheikhupura but now it gives a repulsive look rather than that of a recreational place. On entering the gate one realizes that the park is not being maintained. Result: polythene bags and wrappers are scattered every where, the grass has not been mowed, there are no flowers, and benches are broken and dusty. A rehriwalla who sells 'Dahi Bhallay' in front of the park says, "I used to do much better business when the park was newly completed but now no body comes here."

The main attraction of the town is a Hiran Minar Complex. Aside from common visitors, foreign dignitaries, guests of the federal or the provincial governments, who visit Lahore, are sometimes taken to Hiran Minar in Sheikhupura for a short break. It is also on the schedules of some tourist operators. But the monument is not being maintained properly and local population is not benefiting from it. Given proper care, it could be turned into a real restful facility for locals as well as foreigners.

What Sheikhupura really needs is: an identity, completion and commissioning of bypass, some grass in Jinnah Park and along the road and development of Hiran Minar.

For me, blogging began as a leisure and casual pursuit and now it has become part of my job, creative activity and part of my socialisation. We are still a less connected country of 165,803,560 people (according to the June 2006 estimates) with only a few bloggers, even though the users’ base is exponentially growing.Since blogging is yet to be thoroughly explored by an average person, it has remained a novelty among most people. One question that regular bloggers are frequently asked is, how do they blog?

I started my first blog Light Within sometime ago as a showcase of my published work. Later, I also took up blogging for a foreign NGO working on poverty alleviation through self-help projects in rural areas of Pakistan, besides some others where I co-blogged. My employers also asked me to run a blog for the organisation where I work.Falling prey to the hype around generating additional income online, I started running Google ads and some local ads on my personal webblogs. Small amount cheques started pouring in and this became yet another incentive for me to blog actively. But unfortunately, in Pakistan, the trend has yet to catch the attention of the marketing sector, and hence the online marketing culture is not mature enough.

Weblogging has become a reliable resource for my writings, as well. More often, I blog informally, sharing impressions, generating ideas to see how they invoke reactions, keeping track of others’ work of my interest, or simply ranting or pointing out things that come to my attention. Also, blogging is great platform to prune ideas.

A few things keep blogging on the go: valuable feedback that clears my outlook for whatever I happen to be thinking of writing. I post different projects and invite bloggers to participate.My posts usually carry embedded questions that ask for answers. Readers come and some of them write valuable comments, shooting down my ideas outrightly, or substantiating them with their own experiences and knowledge. Sometimes, people also e-mail their replies. Besides ego-boosting, this helps me to explore the subject at hand from different angles and perspectives.

Secondly, the blogging fraternity is like my real life social community. We ask each others’ well-being through emails and keep ourselves abreast with what is happening to blog friends. Technorati and other online services promptly point out when any of my blogs or posts get mentioned by others bloggers. Like-minded bloggers from all corners of the world gather at each others’ blogs and share life and work experiences that I can learn from. On my blogroll, I have blogs from far and away including China, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Puerto Rico and Bangladesh and more.

Lately, I feel, bloggers like me can help in promoting blogging in this part of the world. I have subscribed to different alerts that keep me updated about technical developments and what people are talking about in the ever-growing blogsphere. Through my multiple blogs, I keep pointing out to new blogging platforms, new blog search engines and directories and other “cool” things bloggers like to have on their sites in addition to urging my friends and students to start their own blogs.Like all bloggers, I have favourites too. I use Google’s Blogger, free platform mainly because tempering with its template and innovating design are easy and Blogger allows hoisting ads. Recently (February 2006) all blogs hoisted on Blogger were banned in Pakistan (unblocked on Aug10, 2006) so I moved some of my blogs to Wordpress, another free and efficient blogging platform. For the rest, I figured out how to bypass the ban through anonymous surfing and some other tricks.Blogging is, in some ways, a reciprocal phenomenon. Numbers of comments I have on my blogs are directly proportional to my commenting elsewhere. Same is the case with links exchange, with a few exceptions. In my view, if people want to comment on blogs, they can (and they should), but they should not feel pressurised to do it simply because they have had a comment from someone.One good way to expand the circle of friends is to reciprocate by visiting back and or through e-mails because this is how one gets to know other bloggers. This method provided me an opportunity to encourage and appreciate fellow bloggers who took time to read what I had written and shared their thought and ideas on the subject of my interests. If a visitor catches my interest and value, I keep going back regularly.

My invisible site tracker Statcounter keeps telling me that I get more visitors from keywords and searches and not from reciprocal visits. Ironically, I get more visitors from abroad who search specific queries (like Thar Desert, Rohi Poetry Pakistan, Waris Shah, Pakistan earthquake economic effects) about Pakistan. But one does not have to blog for specific keywords. On the other hand, my personal blogging is without any theme with only a loose focus on travel, culture, blogging trend and life in Pakistan.

As any regular blogger will reiterate, the best blogging time is at night. By the end of the day, I know what I will blog about. On my home workstation, I log on to my tracker to see how many hits I have got and who all have been to my site. I also see if my Adsense meter has moved, before I start visiting back and replying to comments and emails. Then I write my own blog posts.

“I am neither geek, nor nerd, I am not a hacker, a phreaker, a programmer or any variety of technoid dweeb,” aptly puts an avid blogger. Blogging is easy and can be self-taught, and so, anyone can do it. You only have to take a start.

Best that I personally have experienced, while trying to promoting my own blogs, is leaving comments on others' blogs. But you have to leave informed and quality comments and not just any thing, like "great idea" or a "nice picture," to mark the presence. Comments should be written after reading the posts. When one agrees (or disagrees) with the issue under discussion and tells the writer on the basis of wise argument, a debate is likely to be generated. Bloggers are good at reciprocating (remember every one is interested in creating a loyal following of their own). Comments also add new perceptions and rich content to blogs. Most blogging services provide comment systems that make it possible to get back to the commentator even if they are not bloggers. Even visitors of a particular blog may talk to each other. Sociologists have always been saying about people's enormous desire to communicate, share and be heard. This is easily possible through blogs.

One can’t move much without coming across successful examples of making money online, and claims like how it is easy and how everyone can make money online. After having experienced with some of the more obvious ways to skim the milk from still new models of income in local context, the best I can say is this; "Making money online is not easy, nor it is for everyone."

Yes, many people are successfully making money by blogging. If they can why not “me”, anyone may ask. So let us see who are making reasonable money by blogging. I find "they" are geeks, nerds, techies with good knowledge of computers (html and coding) or are heavily staffed organizations. They have over saturated the niches for computers, gadgets, photography, graphic designs and the like. You need to compete with them? If not, then find out what you like and are good at. The most surprising thing is that some people wants to make money by blogging but they have not decided what to blog about. I would suggest if you have nothing unique (ok fairly unique) to tell and add value then don’t start. And those who do, may make their first $100 with Google adsense in some nine months or more.

Second, those who have flair for writing and rewiring can make good money with high Google PR blogs by writing reviews of products and services on their blog. Here some blogger would find it difficult to write about subject like mesothelioma lawyers, consolidating loans, refinancing mortgage, tax attorney, ameriquest mortgage or mortgage refinance or about an all inclusive holiday package to a place they have not even heard about.

So what are the options? You can start a blog, be at the top in your field. Rest will follow; honest. There is no other way.

That was one of the best and much needed hot cups of hot tea (with solid boiled eggs) that I took. Hehad told me to keep a lemon and suck on it while walking hard and longin hills. The village Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka has about 1200 residents. The villagers established the NGO Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama in 1991, which co-operates with the DGFK e.V. (German Society for Promotion of Culture). The Anjuman itself co-operates with six further projects in the country.

Dolls from Cameroun: Three co-operatives (Akwatinuighah, Akaankang, HandiCraft (CAT) are functioning since 1998 in Bamenda, the capital of the North-West Provinz in Cameroun, which is located near the border to Nigeria. Also this NGO co-operates with the DGFK, Germany. Bamenda has about 60000 residents living on seven hills, who speak eight different languages. Apart from the men of CAT, over 100 women manufacture a variety of handicrafts.

Dolls from Columbia: The co-operative Tantomejor was established in 1999 in Saboya and it works in the meanwhile with three other initiatives. Saboya has about 6000 residents near Chiquinquira, the capital of Departemento Boyaca, north of Bogota. Also this NGO enjoys cooperation of the DGFK. Over 100 women are engaged in the manufacture of handicraft items.
